RAILWAY CROSSINGS
Sir,—As an old resident of the Ashburton County, I. would like to protest against the closing of the railway crossings in Ashburton. I have lived in the County for 69 years; trains were going through here before then, and they have never gone out of their way to hurt anyone. Those crossings were made before most of the present members of the Borough Council were born, and I think it would be an insult to the memory of the men who planned the town to close therfi because a few people have been foolish enough to try to cross when a tram is near. If they do not value their lives enough to keep out of harm’s way they must take the consequences. The closing of the crossings will not stop accidents. It will only cause congestion at the other crossings and in West Street, which is a very busy street, especially in the grain season. Engine drivers are not to blame. They cannot stop in time and they cannot swerve ,to avoid an accident. The blame is all on the car driver. The only reason there are so few accidents at Christchurch crossings is because they have crossing-keepers, so why not have them here? I hope the crossings will not be closed. Old Resident.
