BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES SOME GOOD FORM SHOWN The Ashburton Basketball Association’s competitions were continued on Saturday in chilly but fine weather. Senior A matches were Technical Old Girls v. High Okl Girls, and Convent v. Methven. The former produced good basketball. Technical opened the scoring, and High School replied with three goals, but Technical then scored five more. The game got into a fast stride, with splendid handling, particularly for High O.G. centres, bringing the half-time score to T.O.G. 8, H.O.G. 7. 1 „ Technical opened the second hail with a single, and from then on scoring alternated with the advantage slightly in T.O.G.’s favour, so that the final score was T.O.G. 17, H.O.G. 14. Experience won the match, which was the best of the season so far. Miss M. Hutton was referee. The Methven-Convent game was not up to standard, being marred by spoiling tactics and ground play. Methven opened the score, and at half-time had a lead of three (13-10). The second half was somewhat better, but many chances at goal were missed, especially by Convent. The losers were playing two short, and their two defence are .to be commended for their successful efforts against three Methven players. The game ended: Methven 24, Convent O.G. 14. Mrs F. Husband was the referee.

The senior B game which evoked most interest was High School v. Technical. These teams are generally evenly matched, but on the day High School were well in control. The halftime score was, High School 13, Technical 3, and the final tally High School 26, Technical 5. Results were:

Senior A—Methven 22, Convent 14; Technical O.G. 17, High School O.G. 14. Senior B—Lane, Walker, , Rudkin 20, High School O.G. A 12; High School "O.G B 1; Lauriston heat Technical O.G. by default;, Allenton beat Convent by default. Junior A—High School 17, Technical 5; Allenton 17, Railways 9; Concent lei, Methven 7; Hampstead beat beat Tinwald by default. Junior B—Springburn 36, Technical 5; High School 23, Convent 10; Baring Square 23, Hinds 14.
