N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS NEARING CONCLUDING STAGES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 21. The Dominion bowling tournament was advanced a further stage to-day when G. Batchelor and S. C. K. Smith (North End, Invercargill) won the pairs title. Further rounds in the fours and singles were played. Batchelor and Smith played two games, and came through well, after having been successful in all their games. They scored a clear-cut win from S. V. Fahey and A. C. Rippin (Kia Ton), 23In the other pairs semi-final H. J. C. Bnrd and T. A. Barrow (Seatoun) had a narrow win, 19-18, from K. R. Smith and G. Williams (Edgeware). In the final. S. C. K. Smith was fully extended all through the game and scored a narrow win over Barrow, 16-14. In the play-off for third place between Rippin and Williams the Kia Toa pair scored an easy win, 22-10. Fours Competition After the play to-day only four rinks (two two-lifers and two one-lifers) remain. Those eliminated included E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), L. .1. Edwards ‘ (Caledonian), W. Hampton (Denniston), J. A. Cornier (Lyall Bay), ],. J. Bull (Hawera), IC. S. Ewing (Stratford), P. O’Neill (Runanga), T. C. Pavitt (Fitzroy), W. R. Featherston (Elmwood), H. E. C. Dickson (Khandallalr), J. M. Giles (United), G. A. Crowley (Tolaga Bay), I). Vaughan (Caledonian) and P. Munn (Canterbury). The fours left are W. F. Hadwin (Hutt) and F. White (Runanga) (two-lifers), and G. A. Deare (Mount Eden) and F. Livingstone (Onehunga) (one-lifers). White will play Hadwin and Deare will meet Livingstone at the Edgeware green to-day, and keen games are expected. If a two-lifer wins, the competition will end to-day, but the defeat, of the remaining twolifers will mean a replay to-morrow. Singles Narrowed Down ,T. S. Martin (Edgeware) had a heavy day in the singles. He narrowly heat J. M. Giles (United), who had previously beaten him when they were twolifers, 23-22, and later in the day decisively beat S. Vella (Onehunga by 24- W. J. McKay (Balmacewen) heat T. H. Stringer (Hillsboro) by default, but was beaten in the next round by S. Scarborough (West, End, Auckland) 15-13. On the Elmwood green this morning R. E. McNish (Canterbury) and A. M. Britten (Sydenham) will play their game in the tenth round. L. G. Pope (Stratford) and IT. M. Deavoll (Lyttelton), and S. C. K. Smith and Scarborough will meet in the 11th round games. The winner of the McNishBritten game will play V. C. Potter (Tauranga) in the 11th round. J. Smith (Caledonian), a two-lifer, is waiting for his 12th-round game. Martin reached the 13th round when he heat Vella.
