PENAL SERVITUDE

COMMANDO SENTENCED (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. Alter a court-martial, Trooper John Eric Wilson, a commando, aged 24, was sentenced to 10 years penal servitude for voluntarily helping the enemy by joining the British Free Corps, of which he was stated at one time to be in complete control. Leonard Banning, aged 37, a British school teacher, who was stated to have taught in Berlin before the war, pleaded not guilty at the Old Bailey to charges of assisting the enemy by making propaganda records and broadcasting. The prosecution said that Banning at the outbreak of the war tried to return to Britain but failed. He was imprisoned, and after release agreed to broadcast for the Germans.
