Lady Astor Describes Herself as Extinct Volcano

(Rec. 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 21, Viscount and Lady Astor arrived in the small fruit steamer Eros six days overdue after being battered- by Atlantic gales. Lady Astor told reporters that she was not news but an extinct volcano. Almost before she left the gangplank she gave a quickfire interview on subjects ranging from the British Government to fur coats. Asked what her plans were she replied with a straight face, “I may run for Congress. What do you think of that?” Later she said the English had a deep affection for Americans. The British used to think Americans either film stars or millionaires, but when “a rough American mixed with a rough Englishman” they came to understand each other.
