EIFFELTON
SCHOOL BREAK-UP The Eiffelton School break-up was held in the school grounds on Wednesday afternoon. After a sports programme for the children, Mr J. H. Grigg addressed the large gathef ing of parents and friends, asking them to' be mindful of the needs of the men and women of the Services, Avho, by their defence of the country, had made such a pleasant function possible. Mr H. C. Patterson, chairman of the school committee, who presided, presented prize books to the infant school pupils. Mrs H. Filer, assistant mistress presented the junior room prizes and Mr Grigg presented those for the seniors, as well as the special prizes. The list was:
Dux —Blaine Belcher; runner-up: Chrissie Prendergast; solo singing: senior, Naomi Latimer and Ray Patterson; juniof*, Jill Marsden and Jim Cunningham; infant, Colleen Cobden and Wilfred Belcher; sewing: Form I. and 2: Elaine Belcher; Standard 3 and 4: Avis Muir; Standard 1 and 2: Teresa Prendergast; poster work: Murray Thompson; tennis: champion boy, John Sampson; champion girl, Muriel Thompson; mixed doubles: Chrissie Prendergast and Joan Sampson; helpers’ prize: Isabel Cunningham and Chrissie Prendergast; outdoor work: Malcolm Bruce; meteorology: Tom Pearson. At the conclusion of the prize-giving Mr Patterson thanked all who had subscribed to the picnic and prize funds, and those who had. acted as judges of the singing and sewing. Michael Dalton, captain of the junior room, then made a presentation from the children to Mrs H. Filer, who has resigned from the teaching service to make her home at Waikoaka, Southland. A combined presentation from the parents, the Eiffelton Red Cross, the Tennis Club and the Drama Group was made by Mr Patterson. Supporting speakers were Mrs .1. Cocks (Red Cross), Mr P. Sheehan (Tennis club), Mrs C. Kennedy (Drama Group), and Mr W. R. Brash, head teacher. Mrs Filer feelingly replied and stated that she had spent the happiest years of her teaching at Eiffelton School, and would always remember the friendliness of the children.
