FEW SURVIVE
INHABITANTS OF TINY ISLAND (Rec. 11.45. a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 3. Only six of 200 to 300 mission-train-ed inhabitants of the tiny island of Car Nicobar, 700 miles south-west of Rangoon, are believed to have survived Japanese occupation says Reuter’s New Delhi correspondent. The Allied re-occupation of Car Nicobar and Nancowry, also in the Nicobars, revealed fresh stories of the torture and execution of civilians by the Japanese.
The Chief Commissioner-designate of the Andaman and Nicobars, Mr N. Patterson, reported that Government officials were publicly executed and tortured on suspicion of spying. Five hundred to 700 persons from the two islands were; transferred to another island in a state of semi-starvation. Some were thrown into the sea and 70 others who landed on a small island were reported to have been machinegunned. All Government mission buildings and many shops and huts were destroyed.
