SCATTERED FIRE.
V OUTBREAK IN DAMASCUS. (Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 28. Scattered firing broke out in Damascus early this morning, res' ports the Damascus correspondent s:of the Associated Press. There were occasional detonations which might have been mortar or shell ’ fire. The streets were deserted except for gendarme patrols, but the people apparently were wakeful all night, i Inquiries from the British authorities indicate the possibility that the British 9th Army, now training in Syria, might be called in to prevent more serious hostilities if fighting becomes more general. , was reported to be quiet early to-day, but there were no late reports from that town, with which communications are cut off. * The Beirut correspondent of the British United Press says that rioting and shooting are reported from Homs and Hama, with casualties among Syrian demonstrators and French troops. Telephone communications with both towns are out of action.
