TABLE POTATOES.
AMPLE SUPPLIES PROMISED. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 9. “My attention has been drawn to a rather alarming statement made by the North Canterbury Primary Production Council about future supplies of potatoes,” said the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. B. Roberts) this evening. “While damage by flood, wet conditions, and blight lias had a detrimental effect on patato crops in Canterbury and South Otago, in particular, a survey carried out by tlie Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the Potato Advisory Committee, within the last, few days, establishes that there is no cause for undue alarxn. ••The total acreage in potatoes this season was a record one of 31,500 acres and normally this area would have yielded in the vicinity of 170,000 tons. ' The present: survey indicates that while we fall a long way short of the anticipated yield, there will still be an ample supply of table potatoes for the Dominion’s requirements, which amount to 80,000 tons, and a surplus for export, to the Allied forces.”
The Minister added that it was possible that there would be further inroads by floods or blight, but even so there was no reason to suppose that there would be any shortage to the New Zealand public.
