YOUTH CENTRE.

PROPOSAL IN ASHBURTON. A proposal having as its objective the establishment of a youth centre in Ashburton was discussed last evening at a meeting of about 40 persons, mostly representing organisations, convened by Toe H. Mr E. J. Wood (chairman of Toe H), who presided, said it was desired to assist the youth of the town and district by providing means to induce and enable them to make more profitable use of their leisure hours than many were now doing. The Cobbers’ Club now defunct in Ashburton had moved on right lines and a start could be made" with classes for boxing, wrestling and gymnastics. Eventually it might bo possible to hold a real youth centre where physical fitness could be developed at the same time as intellectual progress was made. The subject was discussed at length and a provisional committee to consider details such as scope of finance and accommodation, and instructors in various activities and to report to a future meeting was appointed as follows: A. Argyle (boxing), H. Lane (ambulance), G. Bowman (swimming), F. X. McDonnell (Catholic Club), T. Kennedy (police), W. K. Waters (Boy Scouts), W. H. C. Holdgate (Tramping Club), E. A. Cockroft, W. Crawford, E. J. Wood and Miss Stewart (Child Welfare Officer), and the Rev. R. B. Gosnell (Rotary), and a representative of the Savage Club. The Borough and County Councils are to be invited to appoint a representative each.
