REPRISAL “TRIALS.”
GERMANS’ FEAR OF BOMBING’. U NAZIS DRIVEN TO NEW TRICK. LONDON. The decision of the German authorities to try British and American airmen as a reprisal for the Russian execution of war criminals is now becoming known throughout Germany. The German authorities believe that Russia could not he intimidated by reprisals on Russians, whereas by taking reprisals on our airmen they hope for a reaction here and in America against the bombing of Germany. But the German people are not so sure that this will happen. A Swiss journal, quoting its Vienna correspondent, says that the Germans could not understand why the reprisals were not directed against Russia; but Vienna opinion was that Berlin, hoping for a change in Russian foreign policy, would not provoke the Soviet.
Hamburg civilians will be witnesses in trials of British and American pilots, the Berlin radio said. The announcer added: German judges will examine witnesses—-both British and American pilots and the mothers and children of Hamburg—coolly and objectively.”
