SMASHING ATTACK.
REPORTED BY THE AMERICANS. ACTIVITY IN NEW GUINEA AREA. (Rec. 1.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The main activity reported by General MacAvthur’s communique to-day was a further smashing air attack on the-Wewak area of New Guinea. Allied bombers, with strong fighter escorts, dropped 200 tons of explosives on enemy shipping, defence installations, supply and bivouac areas, from Aitape to Cape Moom. Two small freighters, seven / coastal vessels and 23 barges were desti’oyed. Eight heavy gun positions Avere destroyed or seriously damaged. A number of parked planes were also destroyed, and numerous buildings were demolished, Avhile fires and explosions indicated extensive destruction in supply dumps.
There was no Japanese fighter opposition.. One Allied plane is missing. In their daily strike against Rabaul (New Britain), our planes based in the Solomons dropped 36 tons of bftinbs on Vunakanau aerodrome. The runways and several gun positions Avere damaged.
