REST PERIOD.
PROVISION FOR WATERSIDERS. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 13. An amendment to the Industrial Rest Period Emergency Regulations, 1943, as they affect watersiders, was gazetted to-night. It was found that the original regulations did not operate equitably in respect of Avaterside workers because of the special conditions of their work so far as many Avatersiders are concerned.
The amending regulations, passed on December 24, and gazetted to-night, gave the Waterfront Control Commission power to determine AVhich Avaterside Avorkers were to benefit under the regulations, the basis of qualification to be regular employment or regular attendance for employment on the waterfront during the period of three months ending December 21, 1943, that date coinciding Avith the end of the Avaterfront pay week. The commission has also been giA r en poAver to determine in each case the basis of payment for the five days’ rest period, Avith the proviso that no worker should receive more than 40 hours’ pay at the ordinary general cargo rate.
