STORM WATER.

THE POSITION AT LAURISTON. COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S REPORT, A special meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held to-day to deal with urgent matters. It was originally intended that tho chairman of tho New Zealand River Control and Soil Conservation Board (Mr L. Newnliam) attend and take part in a discussion on setting tip catchment districts in Mid-Canterbury, but. he was unable to attend.

An inspection of the locality where measures have boon taken to relievo the flooding of the Lauriston township was made on Saturday by the Countv Chairman (Mr C. A. Campion) and Messrs H. Harrison and H. G. Crothers.

Reporting to the Co'uncil to-day, Mr Campion said that insufficient provision for flood waters was made by the work and it was recommended: (I) That Mr I. A. Hart be requested to clear the gorse and broom on bis property between the water race and the road for a distance of five chains from the boundary of Mr F. R. Sides’ property within 14 days; (2) that the banks of the water race be graded off by the Council, where necessary, in Mr Hart’s property; (3) that a number of openings be made in the boundary fence, between Mr Hart’s and Mr Sides’ properties to permit the escape of surface, flood water, the occupiers having failed to comply with tho notices served on them bv tho Council. The level of the road lias already been lowered to’its normal level and if tho broom and gorse are removed, the banks of the water raco levelled and openings made in the boundary fence it is felt that an equitable distribution of surface flood water will bo ensured.

An inspection was also made of the water course at the Lauriston township and it was thought advisable to instal a larger pipe across the road and lead flood water into a large gravel pit near tho railway line. No other action was thought necessary, as the clearing of the water course higher up should relieve tho township of flood water to a considerable extent.
