DAMAGE TO WHEAT
NEARLY £7OO AS COMPENSATION. jAR-EAS IN CANTERBURY. i CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Seven claims arising from hail and l’rost damage to wheat in Canterbury have been settled since the establishment- of the wheatgrowors’ eompnnsation fund scheme. Nearly U7OO lias been paid to growers in compensation for damage to a total area of 422 acres of wheat. Damage was done to 214 j acres by hail, and to 208 acres by lrost. The compensation fund scheme is administered by the Wheat Committee, and provides for compensation for damage to wheat crops as the result ol hail, frost or flood. Claims are payable only when the loss is more than 50 per cent, of the normal yield. Nineteen claims for damage to a total of 870 acres have been received since the scheme came into operation, (nit six of these do not come within the scope of the regulations. Some growers have claimed for damage resulting from heavy rain, which does not constitute a flood, and others for damage by heavy winds. There have also been claims where the damage has not resulted in the 50 per cent. loss. The claims which have been settled have come from Mid-Canterbury and South Canterbury. With the exception of one claim, the others are now in the hands of the adjuster appointed to deal with them.
