LOOKING BACK.
x fifty years syne. (From the "Guardian,” Jan. 20, 1893). Inspection of Arms—The annual inspection of the arms and accoutrements in use by the Ashburton Rifle Volunteers and the Ashburton Rifle Club was made on Tuesday evening by Colonel Bailey and Staff-Sergeant-Major Jones. There was a fair muster, considering the harvest season, when so many men are on leave, and all the arms were duly submitted for inspection with the exception of those of a dozen or so mon whose whereabouts could not be ascertained on the short notice given.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, (From the "Guardian,” Jan. 25, 1918). Tuarangi. Home—lt may not be generally known that the flower gardens at the Tuarangi Old Men’s Home are well worth visiting. It is just a little late now to see them at their best, but they are still a mass of bloom, very pleasing to the eye. In two or three years time they will he on© of the show places of Ashburton, as many improvements are contemplated. .They reflect the very highest credit on the gardener, Mr H. Knox, whose taste and judgment is displayed in the various flower beds and in the grouping of divers colours in complete harmony with each other and the whole.
