AMERICAN CIGARETTES
PROSECUTIONS IN AUCKLAND. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. Trafficking in uncustomed American cigarettes in Auckland was revealed when five people were prosecuted in the Magistrate’s! Court to-day. The Crown Prosecutor said that the American tobacco and cigarettes brought intp the country duty free were solely for the use of American troops, but it had been found that quantities of.these duty free goods had got into several hands, and there had been trafficking in them.
“The seriousness of this position is the los& of revenue to the Government and unfair competition with legitimate traders,” added Mr Meredith. For being in possession p£ uncustomed American cigarettes, William Cleary, D. J. Maher, and Flora McKenzie were each fined £25. Arthur Grange, for selling uncustomed cigarettes, was fined £25 on each of two charges. A. J. Andrews, of Rotorua, was fined £35 for being in possession of uncustomed cigarettes. /
