NATIONAL SAVINGS.
THE ASHBU'RTON; QUOTA. The following statement on the National Savings campaign, in Ashburton was made to-day by the chairman of the local committee (Mr A. A. McDonald): — > It is not quite 12 months since the beginning of the campaign, and the following record is shown, at the Ashburton Post. Office. This excludes the areas of Methven, Rakaia, Staveley, Mayfield and Hinds, which are districts entirely on their own,, working separately from Ashburton: —■ . £ Deposits ... ... 42,42 S Bonds 33,380 Total £75,808 Depositors 2644, or 20 per cent, of population. Groups 154, combining a total of 1536 depositors, included in the above percentage. National Savings at 2 p.m. to-day amounted to £652.
At this stage the committee feels grateful for the wonderful loyalty of the people, beoause it would have been impossible to achieve the record of completing the 51st successive week in attaining the quota allotted at the beginning of the year without their support. The committee congratulates Ashburton, because witlr a matter of only about £3OO to find it looks as though, it will achieve its objective—the completion of the 52nd week. This should show a total of £76,000, or the equivalent of an investment of 11 guineas per head of population. Besides being a'very good war effort on the part,of Ashburton tliis has enhanced the reputation of the town, because it is the only large-sized centre in the South Island which has
kept up its -weekly quota. If the same committee carries on next year it is to be hoped the citizens will not forget there are months and months of work to be covered before, the war ends, and while there may perhaps be less opportunities for spending money on luxuries, the need for backing our war machine grows greater day by day. Itmeans more planes, more, guns, more ammunition, ..more men, with then supplies. One can. help to victory with a contribution from the pocket, thus leaving a clear conscience, plus a. good investment-, which means that a. sum of money available to spend in whatever .manner one likes under peace conditions.
