FIERCE FIGHTING IN EGYPT. BRITISH ATTACK IN NORTH. i LONDON, July 28. There was considerable artillery activity on both sides in Egypt yesterday, following the British attacks; in the northern sector. During the day fierce fighting developed. To-day’s Cairo communique says: “Following our attacks on enemy positions in the northern sector oh Sunday night, severe fighting developed yesterday, with heavy artillery duels.” The communique adds that Allied fighter-bombers and light bombers continued their attacks. A force of 40 Stukas was attacked by fighters, which shot down three enemy aircraft during the day.

Last night targets at Tobruk Avere successfully attacked and landing grounds in the El Daba area Avere also raided.

The Cairo correspondent of (he British United ‘Press says that the comparative lull in other sectors should not be considered as a stalemate. Both sides are strengthening their positions and feeling out the opposing strength. The Rome radio has announced that Colonel Girardo Vaiarini, of the Italian forces, was killed in action on the Egyptian front. He held the Savoip rder, which is the highest Italian distinction.
