WHEN TOKIO IS TAKEN.
MR FRASER’S PROMISE TO MAORIS. (P.A.) WHANGARET, April 20. A declaration by the 'Prime Minister (the R.t Hon. P. Fraser) that Maori troops would be among the first to occupy Tokio caused a spontaneous demonstration at a tribal gathering at Whirinaki yesterday, when 2000 persons honoured the memory of Captain Harding Leaf, a Ngapuhi chieftain, who died leading his men in Crete. The assembled people rose as one body, and, led by Sir Apirana Ngata, performed the traditional war haka, “Kainate, Kainate.” Sir Apirana said that the Maoris would gladly fill a third Maori Battalion, if needed, and were prepared to make any sacrifice to win.
