QUOTA AGAIN COLLECTED. SALES OP BOMBED BONDS. The campaign for the collection ol National Savings, withe the added incentive this week of the sale ol bonds for the purchase of bombers, has been taken up keenly in Ashburton and the pennant indicating that the town’s quota of €BB2 for this week had been reached for lhe 22nd week in succession •was flying from the Post Office mast by 11 o’clock this morning. The sales of bonds yesterday and today went on steadily and the total up to noon to-dav was £917 L‘ls Gd. Tt is the intention of the Ashburton National Savings Committee to push the sale of bonds and ordinary National Savings throughout the week with the object of concluding the period with the highest total of savings yet reached. Every effort is being made to bring Ashburton into a worthy place on the list of contributing towns’ at- the close ol the campaign on Saturday. The committee of the Ashburton Imperial Harmonica, Band at its last meeting decided to purchase three £lO bonds for bombers, Investments at Rakaia up to yesterday afternoon totalled £O6B. FIRST DAY'S RECEIPTS. OVER £IOO,OOO CONTRIBUTED. (P.A.) WELLINGTON March 23. With only a. few small returns outstanding, more than £IOO,OOO was contributed throughout New Zealand today to the “Bonds for Bombers’.’ campaign. This is regarded as highlygratifying for the first day. The Wellington sales totalled £16,000. “This is not the time for words, but for actions,” said the Prime Minister (the TU. Hon. P. Fraser) to-day at the opening of the campaign. Mr Fraser spoke briefly, and bought a bond as soon as the campaign opened. Ho was followed in this by several members ot the Cabinet. In a short speech. Sergeant C. Knight. D.F.M.. the first New Zealand airman to he decorated in this war, said that not only the Air Force but all the fighting services needed .the strongest backing the public could give them. When New Zealand was attacked the Air Force was both the first line of defence and the first line of attack. “And attack wo must,” he said, “but we cannot do this without very rta 1 support from you.’’
