BISCUIT PRODUCTION.
INCREASED SERVICE CONTRACT. MEETING CIVIL CONSUMPTION. (P.A.) WELLINGTON', This Day. , Mr D. I. McDonald (Secretary to the New Zealand Biscuit Manufacturers' Association) stated to-day that biscuit manufacturers who have been engaged on a service biscuit contract for the last 10 months, met at Christchurch, at. the last week-end to consider a request by the Food Controller for a large increase in the contract. One of the food controller’s officers was present and explained fully the circumstances giving rise to the request and the manufacturers concerned had agreed to reorganise their businesses to meet the substantial production now required ot them for war purposes. This adjustment was to be commenced immediately, said Air MacDonald. and naturally meant some reduction in the varieties and quantities or biscuits that would be available for domestic consumption. However, the general public could rest assured that there would be ample biscuits available to meet all normal domestic requirements and except that certain varieties might disappear from the market it was not likely the public would be greatly affected. It had been further decided, however, that no biscuits in future be put in packets and beyond the small quantity of packeted biscuits now in the shops of retailers all biscuits would have in future to he bought loose. AYitli the assistance of the workers in the industry, who already materially assisted toward meeting the increased production of the last 10 months, factory proprietors feel that the substantially increased volume production volume production now required can bo obtained.
