FIFTY YEARS’ SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 20, 1892). English Supremacy—Cairo': The British troops received the now Khedive on his arrival at Alexandria. Addressing the garrison, Abbas Bey said that during his late visit to Europe he was much impressed with the evidences of English supremacy. Tiie British Navy—A number of men engaged in the construction of the new warships at Sheerness is being increased, and an order has been issued to the effect that overtime is to be worked until the vessels are ready tor sea. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Jan. 20, 1917). Fever Ward at Hospital—The delay in accepting tenders for the. new fever ward at the Ashburton Hospital is duo to the Health Department having to approve of tile extra amount which the building will cost, over and above the amount already approved of. At a meeting of the Hospital Board on January 8 the chairman was appointed to accept a tender when the necessary authority came to hand, but so far that authority has not been received.
