GRANT FOR WORK.

IMPROVEMENTS AT HIGH SCHOOL DECISIONS OF THE BOARD. The granting of payment up to £167 for ground improvement and repairs to the Friedlander Hall was advised to the meeting of the Ashburton High School Board of Governors this morning, when there were present Messrs W. H. Woods (chairman), E. H. Orr, F. Frampton, H. C. B. Withell, N. Robilliard, G. C. Nicoll, S. Smith, D. H. Moore and Mrs A. N. Grigg. The amount could be taken from the Board’s endowment funds, the advice stated. The suggested repair of the tennis courts at a, cost of £lll should be a charge on the incidental funds. It was stated that the incidentals last year amounted to £766, out of which had to be paid the salaries of the caretaker and the secretary and payments such as classroom materials, lighting and fuel, water rates, the expenditure totalling £636. It was decided to repair the tennis courts during the holidays. The Headmaster (Mr E. A. Cockroft) reported as follows: “The roll number is two less than last month. The break-up will be held on Friday, December 12 in St. Andrew’s Hall. Dr. Geo. Jobberns, at one time on the staff of the school, is to be the speaker. The entrance examination commences to-day and most of our senior. forms are presenting themselves for it. “Some of the boys over 15 years have signified their willingness to assist farmersi during the holiday period.

Farm Report.—Mr McGregor reports as follows: —All the sheep have been shorn and a draft of 23 lambs has been sent to the works. This is approximately 75 per cent of the lambs available as the others are Ryeland and Southdown ewe lambs which are being held back for the flock. The average weight is, rather high—37.7lbs and one lamb weighed 441bs. The remainder are in a forward condition and should go away soon.

“Early in the month hay was cut, raked and baled and is now in the shed under cover. The cut was an early one and the weight was rather less than last year’s, but already a strong growth shows promise for the second cut. Oats (Algerian) have been in ear for some time and should be harvested early. The barley is doing well, but still lias a lot of growth to make before harvest time comes.” It was left to the chairman and the Headmaster to make arrangements for the break-up ceremony. Advice that a. Boy Scout week' would be held in February, ending on the 22nd, was received and it was requested that facilities be made available for Boy Scouts to attend school in uniform and that they be allowed to have the Friday afternoon off. The approval of the Minister of Education had been given to the proposals. The letter was referred to the Headmaster. Advice was received that a heating engineer would pay a visit to the school toward the end of this week to go into the question of further extensions of the heating system which was at present being installed. It was decided that aii endeavour be made for town members of the Board to meet the engineer during his visit to discuss the whole subject. For the visiting committee, Mr Smith reported on the state of the inside of the Friedlander Hall, where the walls were looking very dingy and in need of brightening up. The chairman said it would not be worth while doing anything in the interior till the leakages from the outside had been stopped, a work that had been authorised. It was agreed that the renovation of the inside of the hall should be carried out during the holidays, on completion of the exterior repairs. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £363 6s lid.
