TABLE TENNIS.

TOURNAMENT IN ASHBURTON. A championship' tournament under the auspices of the Ashburton table Tennis Association was held in the Arcade on Saturday evening. Although it was the first tune, the committee had essayed to conduct such an event the tournament proved a complete success both from the competitive point ot view and also financially, and it should prove an incentive to the Association to airango others in the future. Twenty-two entries were received for the men’s singles ehamionsliip and an excellent competition resulted, in the quarter-finals, L. Solway, who played well throughout, ran li. Willis to advantage games at 20-22 and 21-23, and K. Reynolds lost to his club-mate, 4. Bradley, in three close games. J. Cooksou, who had the bye in this round, was beaten by Bradley m the semi-finals with scores oi 21-15, 11-21 and 21-15. in tin? final, H. Willis defeated J. Bradley by 21-15 and 22-20. The winner was down 14-20 at one stage, but made a great recovery to even the scores at 20 all and then 21 all, finally winning; the set and the championship at 23-21. Bradley is to be commended on Ins consistently good play. He met live good players in his progress to the final, W. Taylor (Eiffelton), P. Baker, K. Reynolds, J. Cookson and Hariy Willis, lip is also deserving of praise lor the sporting spirit lie showed, especially in not claiming his possible right to a bye in the semi-finals. The win of the two Catholic players, Pat. Bradley and .Noel Fox, m the doubles was a popular one and they richly deserved tiie honour. I hey combined well and played consistently. In their final with Baker and Solway, el Fire Brigade, after being down in tiie first game 19-21 they’ recovered well to win the next two games at 21-16 and 21-18. Only seven players entered tor tin* ladies’ singles, five being from St. Andrew’s Club. The other two, 'Misses K. and M. Sheehan, were from Eiffelton. Miss K. Sheehan played very well to win.
