PARENTS RECEIVE THE NEWS. WOUNDED LAST ANZAC DAY.
(P.A.) I NVEROARGILL, This Day. Excitement prevailed at Colne Ray, a small seaside settlement 34 miles from Invercargill, when it became known that the son of well-known local residents, Mr and Mrs W. G. Hinton, had gained the Victoria- Cross. Mrs Hinton was handed the official announcement shortly after 11 o’clock. Mr Hinton was working in the bush and when a neighbour conveyed the news to him hie was inclined to treat the story with scorn. Sergeant Hinton is the fifth child of a family of seven, only two of whom are boys. The other brother is at present working on the West Coast. Sergeant Hintoni was born and educated at- Oolac Bay. "Afterwards lie worked in a, store at Tokanui and then removed to the West 'Coast. He was a keen athlete, boxer and footballer. Sergeant Hinton received his wound last Anzae Day. Congratulations are being extended to the family from all quarters. WITH BYRD’S EXPEDITION. (P*A.) GREYMOUTH, This Day. Sergeant Hinton was employed at the Public Works Department workshops at Greymouth for several years prior to the war. 'He was with Byrd s South Pole expedition. He was the 22nd enlistment at Greymoutli. Sergeant Hinton played senior Rugby with the United Club, Greymoutli.
