SHEARING SEASON

MAY POSSIBLY BE PROLONGED. USUAL LABOUR NOT AVAILABLE. ADVICE BY THE MINISTER. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. In a statement to-day the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) pointed out that the usual number of shearers would not be available this year, consequently there was a possibility that shearing would; not be completed until later than was the case normally. While he did not anticipate the difficulty would be unduly great, he recommended sheep-farmers to assist by shearing dry sheep as early as possible before the main season commenced, and also mentioned that in the shearing season itself farmers might reach mutual arrangements to have the sheds filled with dry sheep so that there would be no delay in shearing. The Minister also suggested that local primary production committees, branches of the Farmers’ Union, and other appropriate organisations should endeavour, in conjunction with tho New Zealand Workers’ Union, to arrange rosters of sheds in an order that would entail the least loss of time on the part of shearers in travelling from shed to shod. Ho felt confident that nil concerned would give willing and loyal co-operation.
