RAIN SHOWERS AND COLD WIND. .Sudden changes in the conditions in Ashburton occurred late yesterday afternoon, the wind swinging to the south from the north-west, and bringing stqrnis with it. The sky cleared between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. but clouded again and heavy rain fell early this morning, 41 points being registered at the Domain weather station. A cold wind blew this morning, and there was a heavy shower in the forenoon. Conditions'this afternoon were cold, with heavy passing cloud banks interspersed with brief periods of sunshine. The thermometer rose to 69.8 degrees yesterday, and the night time minimum was 39.8 degrees. The barometer this morning showed a small rise, standing at 29.66 inches. SNOW ON HIGH LEVELS. There was heavy snow at Springburn at G o’clock this morning following heavy rain showers and light falls of snow earlier in the night, as a result of the sudden change in the weather during last evening. The ground was very wet for a time and this prevented the snow remaining on the ground. Conditions were calm this morning, the sun shining again by 10 o’clock. There was a light fall of snow in the Methven district last night. This morning there was a thin covering in the township but it lasted only a few hours. There is still about one and a-half inches in the Gorge. TO-DAY’S FORECAST. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Moderate south-westerly winds. Some isolated showers at first, chiefly on the coast, but weather otherwise fair. Temperatures cold with frosts likely tonight. Further outlook: Fair to fine.
