THE ASHBURTON FESTIVAL
RECALLS FOR THE SECOND DAY. VERY GOOD WORK AGAIN SEEN. There wore several very attractive classes in the morning and afternoon sessions of the Ashburton Competitions Society’s festival, which is in its second day to-day. Most of them were for children, but in the afternoon the ladies’ solo for the Hawker Cup was heard. Results of the sessions up to the time the “Guardian” went to press were as follow, competitors being from Ashburton unless otherwise stated: Vocal Section. SONG, girls or boys, 11 and under 13. Own selection. Recalled : Jill Ledsham (Ch-ch), Margaret Josling (Ch-ch), Noeline Baker (Bakaia). Very highly commended : Esmay Holme (Ch-ch), Joey Sheehan (Rakaia), Keith Tonks. Recalled: Mrs Chos. O’Keefe (Tinwald), Misses Myrtle Carter (Ch-ch), Merlyn' Todd (Ch-ch), and Gertrude Ardagh (Ch-ch). Highly commended: Misses Moira Wotton (Greymouth) and Eileen Rond (Ch-ch.) Also competed: Misses Gwen Kelly (jCh-ch), iMaitel Marsden (Timaru), Annis Spencer (Ch-ch), Mavis Shearer (Methven), Jill Reece, Mesdames G. Cliff (Timaru), G. M. Latimer, Moifatt (Rakaia) and W. Greenway (Ch-ch). The judge said the singing in this class had been ftary, very good and though there was provision for only three recalls he had been of the opinion that four should be asked to sing again.
Elocution Section. RECITATION TEST, girls, under 11. “Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore” (W. B. Rands). Recalled: Valerie McNattv, Pauline Leatham (Ch-ch), Helen Nourish (Methven). ■ Very highly commended: Joan Amos and Janet Crawford.
