MORE FIERCE FIGHTING
BATTLE OF DNIEPER
CLAIMS BY GERMANS
NO BRIDGEHEADS ESTABLISHED
(United Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, August 26. The latest reliable information concerning the fighting on the eastern front indicates that the Germans have so far faded to establish any bridgeheads across the Dnieper. Fierce fighting is apparently continuing in the central sector around Gomel, where the Soviet forces have been counter-attacking.
The Soviet communique issued at mid-day confines itself to the statement: “During last night our troops were engaged in stubborn fighting on the whole front.”
The German High Command announced:' “Units of General Kleisfs panzer army have captured Dnepropetrovsk, after heavy fighting. Thus the enemy has lost his last strong-pomt on the western bank of the Dnieper below Kiev. In the attack on the Dnieper Bend since the battle of Oman, General Kleists forces have captured 83,000 prisoners.
The German News Agency claims that the Germans have captured Luga.
The Berlin radio stated that almost the entire Finnish territory north-east of Lake Ladoga surrendered to the Soviet m 1941 is again in Finnish hands.
The Moscow newspaper “Pravda” says that a vigorous counter - offensive in White Russia has dnven the Germans from a big ancient city (unnamed), which the Geimans held for five days. German planes attacked Leningrad on Monday, but were dispersed. , . _____
