ST. JAMES THEATRE. “BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940.’ Fred Astaire and. Eleanor Powell world’s greatest dancers top the castin the gay musical and dance feast, “Broadway Melody of 1940,” showing finally to-night. George Murphy, Frank Morgan and lan Hunter together with a- miscellany of jugglers and comedians combine to add to the gaiety of the brilliantly decorated production. f “Maisie,” the by now familiar showgirl with the heart of gold, perennially stranded and perennially wise-cracking her way to new adventures, appears in her brightest setting to date in the latest of the series, “Maisie Was a Lady,” which opens on Wednesday at 8 pan., with Ann Sothern again in the starring role and with (Lew Ayres and Maureen O’Sullivan heading the- supporting cast. Though a society background may appear at first thought somewhat incongruous for Maisie, it i provided. Miss Sothern in this instance with her best story in the series, well knit, believable and appealing. And the star herself was never better. Through her, Maisie has become an unforgettable screen character, destined to take her place as one of motion pictures’ most original creations.
