THREE MONTHS’ GAOL.
OBSTRUCTING THE POLICE. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April o._ A sentence of three months’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on John Robert Hamerton, aged 28, a fibrous plasterer, by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., on a charge of obstructing Superintendent Lopdell in the execution of his duty. On a further charge of conducting a meeting prohibited under the Public Safety Emergency Regulations, he pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial.
Evidence by police witnesses was that Hamerton, on Friday night, spoke at a public meeting under the auspices of the Christian Pacifist Society, and refused to stop when asked by the police.
Hamerton said that he could not have done otherwise than speak what he believed to be the message of Jesus Christ in relation to war.
