ATTRACTIONS'FOR EASTER
QUIET PERIOD IN ASHBURTON. There is not a Very extensive list of holiday attractions over the Easter period in Ashburton. The shops will observe the late night to-morrow and will remain closed after that till Tuesday morning, with a few exceptions such as the bakers’ shops, which will be open on Saturday. The Ashburton Bowling; Sub-Centre will conduct a pairs competition on the Ashburton and Allenton bowling greens on Good Friday. Ashburton Boy Scouts will start a bicycle trip to New Brighton! to-morrow evening and are due to return to Ashburton Monday afternoon. On Good Friday there will he a combined church service at the Baptist Church conducted by the Ashburton Ministers’ Association. This will start at 7.30 o’clock in the evening. Friendly club matches will be played ton the howling greens over the holiday period and on Sunday there will he a harmonica band championship- qpntest in the Domain. A concert for patriotic funds will he giyen by one of the visiting harmonica hands in St. James Theatre on Sunday evening, starting at 8.30 o’clock. A visit by the Christchurch Salvation Army Band will be made to Ashburton on Monday , evening, when a musical programme will be presented at the Salvation Army Hall.
Two Bible Class Camps. The Presbyterian Bible Class camp, which opens to-morrow evening at Rakaia, is expected to bo one of the most successful that lias' ever been held in the district. Including youth workers’ and ministers a record attendance of 120 is anticipated. For the purposes of sport the camp has been divided into three houses, and it is thought that this will greatly add to the interest of the proceedings. The houses are to be called after the Rev. John Macfarlane, the, first Presbyterian minister in New Zealand, the Rev. Henry Burnett, the first Presbyterian minister in Ashburton, and the Rey. Peter Milne ,ono of the first missionaries. sent outside New Zealand by the Church. The Rev. L. Farquhar-Gunn, of Riccarton, will be the chief speaker at the camp, while the Rev. A. McNeur, of St. Andrew’s, South Canterbury, will be camp father; assisted by the Rev. L. Bibby, of Mothven. The position of camp mother w r ill be filled Jjy Sister K. Ifivery,-who will have as her assistants Misses Helen Murray and J. Burnett, training institute 5 students at Dunedin.
The study book that will .be used at the camp is one writen by the Rev. R. S. Watson, while the pageant, “More the Conqueror,” written by Mrs Watson is to be enacted at the camp. At Rakaia the girls will be accommodated at the public school while the boys will be quartered in a lodge room. The various churches at Rakaia have placed every facility, at the disposal of the campers. The annual camp of the South Canterbury Methodist/ Bible Class Union commences at the Willowby School tomorrow and the prospects are for an , attendance of about 80.
