MAKING OF MARGARINE

WELLINGTON, December 19'. Although the Margarine Act, 1908, confers pow'er on the Governor-General in Council to make regulations prescribing the conditions and restrictions subject to. which licences to manufacture margarine under the: act shall be granted, no such regulations,have been made. In consequence, licences to manufactude margarine have, up to the present, been granted and renewed on payment of the prescribed! fee, if the premises to lie used for manufacture are found on inspection to /he in ci sanitary condition. For some time past it has been felt that additional restrictions should he imposed on the granting of licences, and their renewal, and! the purpose of the Margarine Regulations, 1940, issued with tonight’s Gazette, is to make provision accordingly. The regulations provide for the inspection of premises, andi no licences will he granted unless the. Minister for Agriculture is satisfied that the premises are equipped with sufficient appliances for the preparation and manufacture of margarine, and are sanitary and in all other respects reasonably suitable for use foO* that purpose. The Minister is given discretion to grant or refuse a licence, and is required to take, into consideration : —(a) The report of the inspector on the premises; (b) the probable or possible effect of competition from the premises sought to lie licensed on the demand for butter; (c) all other relevant matters as the Minister thinks proper.
In granting a licence or renewal of a licence, a condition may be imposed fixing the. maximum quantity of margarine that may be manufactured during any period specified ini the licence or certificate of renewal.
