CARS CONVERTED.
OFFENCES BY TWO LADS (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A venture by two Christchurch lads, aged fourteen and sixteen respectively, to South Canterbury in search of work, had a sequel in the Children’s Court when they were jointly charged with at Timaru on October 22 of a four-gallon tin of oil; on * October 22 with the conversion of a car valued at £250; and on October 24 with the conversion of a car valued at £3OO. One boy, who had been before the Court before, was placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Qfficei for two years, and the other’s case was adjourned for twelve months. Detective N. Thomson told Mr H. A. Young, S.M., who presided, that the boys left their homes on a motorcycle with the idea of getting work in Timaru or Dunedin. They took some camping gear with them and lived on the Ashburton Riverbed for a few days, later going on to Timaru. There they ran out of petrol and converted a car so that they could syphon out the petrol. On October 24. they took another car in Timaru, and drove to Oamaru, where they were arrested by the Oamaru police. The father of one boy said the lads had plenty of money with them, but probably took the cars to get petrol, as they had no coupons.
