NEW CHAIRMEN

BOROUGH COUNCIL COMMITTEES CHANGES MADE LAST NIGHT. DECISIONS OF THE COUNCIL. Changes in the personnel of the committees of the Ashburton Borough Council last evening gives Air E. Buchanan (Deputy-Mayor) the chairmanship of the finance and library committee, while Mr H. W. Sherratt is chairman of the works and drainage committee, Mr J. Thompson chairman of reserves, Domain and' cemetery, and Mr S. Mitchell chairman of by-laws and abattoir. Mr J. Shaw retains the chairmanship of. the water, lighting and fireprevention committee.

There were present at the meeting the Mayor (Dr. J. Connor), Messrs E. Buchanan, S. Osborne, J. Shaw, J. Thompson, H. W. H. Smallbone, A. H. Fenn, A. A. McDonald, S. Mitchell, H. W. Sherratt and E. C, Bathurst. The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £3BBB 3s 2d. Ten residents of Wakanui Road forwarded a petition asking the Council to asphalt the footpath between Rapley and Patching Streets. A similar request in respect of the path in Dobson Street, between Cass and William Streets, was received from eight residents.

The work asked for was placed on the list for carrying out when opportunity offered.

The Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) wrote acknowledging the Council’s request that visual warning signals should be placed at the level crossings in the business area of Ashburton, and said that the representations would receive full consideration. x

The district manager for the Public Trust Office at Ashburton (Mr A. C. Robinson) wrote asking if the Council would consider the supply of water from the high-pressure scheme to a property on the west. side which is under the control of the Public Trustee and on which water is at present supplied by a well, the windmill of which would have to be removed because <)f its bad condition. The application was granted on the usual terms. In the report of the traffic control of the Borough for the month, it was stated that 12 drivers had been tested and 10 had qualified. The Inspector had reported that cyclists were being encouraged to use the new cycle stands in East Street and that results so far had been exceedingly good.A grant of pne guinea was made to the Ashburton branch of the Workers’ Educational Association.

The Ashburton Patriotic Committee wrote asking permission to close portion of East Street to traffic from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the nights of Friday and Saturday next when a street fair for patriotic purposes would be held.—Permission was granted. Because, of the death of Dr. G. I. Miller alterations in the Council Committees were necessitated and the following new committees were set up.Finance and Library—Messrs Buchanan (chairman), Sherratt, Shaw, Thompson and Mitchell; Works and drainage* Messrs Slierratt (chairman), McDonald, Smallbone and Bathurst; Water, lighting, and fire prevention, Messrs Shaw (chairman), Fenn, Osborne and Smallbone; Reserves, Domain and cemetery, Messrs Thompson (chairman), Buchanan, Fenn and Osborne ; By-Laws and Abattoir, Messrs Mitchell (Chairman), McDonald,, Bathurst and Smallbone. Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Curator (Mr D. H. Leigh) on work carried out by his staff in the last four weeks. . Cemetery Board. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement, which showed that there was a credit balance of £53 17s 4d. Receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £37 12s 6d.
