Letters received by relatives from ratings say that the cruiser Australia sank the French destroyer Audaceiux, and captured the. cruiser Gloire in the naval engagement off Dakar in September. Both the ships tvere ampng six French warships which escaped through Gibraltar to Dakar a week before General De Gaulle’s attempt to land there A message from Sydney states that the' Secretary for the Navy (Mr W. M. .Hughes).confirms the report that the Australia; •was at Dakar, /but he has ,no knowledge of the engagement with French, warships. ''
