THE HOME GUARD.
NOT FOR STRIKE-BREAKING MINISTER DENIES SUGGESTION WELLINGTON, This Day. A denial of. the suggestion that the Home Guard might he used as an instrument for strike-breaking was made by the Hon. R. Semple in an interview to-day, when referring to a< Palmerston North report about an inaugural meeting of the Guard there. ‘The suggestion is positively absurd. Eor a clique at Palmerston or anywhere else t.o accuse the Government of trying to smash unions is the essence of cowardice and black ingratitude/’ said the Minister, who added that the Guard "was created for the opposite purpose, to protect and defend the liberty of the people, this country, including the liberty of trades unionists. The Government was at the back of the movement and had done more to put trade unionism on the map than any other in the world.
