Semple in an interview to-day, when referring to a< Palmerston North report about an inaugural meeting of the Guard there. ‘The suggestion is positively absurd. Eor a clique at Palmerston or anywhere else t.o accuse the Government of trying to smash unions is the essence of cowardice and black ingratitude/’ said the Minister, who added that the Guard "was created for the opposite purpose, to protect and defend the liberty of the people, this country, including the liberty of trades unionists.
