WOOLLEN MILL WORKERS’ PAY. r" - DEFINITION OF “SHIFT.” (Per Press Association). DUNEDIN, This Day. Mr Justice Kennedy heard an appeal from a Magistrate’s judgment in a case in which James John Grant, a carder, was appellant and Ross and Giendirining respondents. The Magistrate dismissed Grant’s claim. .The appeal involved the definition of the term “shift w'orlc” in; the woollen mills labour legislation suspension' order, 1940. It was a. test casts to determine the- right to shift pay by 300 employees at .the Roslyn Mills, also by woollen miil workers in other parts of New Zealand.
The facts Were that Grant was paid wages, at the award rate but, in addition, claimed in respect to the period from June 20 to July 16 tire sum of £2 17s, at the rate of 3s a shift. He had worked by day only, doing regular hours of work.
The Judge held that appellant was working on shift Avork Avithin the meaning of the order, and was therefore entitled to 3s a shift extra.
