PATRIOTIC NEEDS

THE MILLION POUND APPEAL. CAMPAIGN NOW UNDER WAY. After a period of strenuous organising, the £1,000,000 “All Purposes” Appeal for general patriotic purposes is now in full swing throughout the Dominion. .With the key slogan, “Give Till it-Hurts,” this appeal is arranged on a combined provincial basis, and all funds collected will be administered by tlie particular provincial patriotic councils responsible for raising them.

The clearing of the ground for the intensivo campaigning . now in operation has made heavy calls upon the personal services of those responsible for local committees, and the organisers anticipate that the public will show its appreciation of these efforts by a prompt and generous financial response. The threefold purpose of the appeal—comforts for the troops overseas and within New Zealand, relief of air raid victiihs, and rehabilitation work —will commend it to the great majority of people, and the object is to have a substantial portion of the £1,000,000 in hand when the campaign is suspended at the end of November for the summer vacation.

That funds are urgently needed for these purposes lias been made abundantly clear from time to time, and letters from New Zealanders on active service overseas emphasise the. eagerness with which such efforts are greeted by the troops. Adequate safeguard,s having been made regarding the administration and venue of the funds, as well as provision for the transfer of money overseas for patriotic purposes, the way has been opened for a maximum gesture from the people of the Dominion to the soldiers who form New Zealand’s front line contribution to the Empire’s war effort.
