WORK STARTED
THE NETHERBY DRAINAGE.
LOAN OBTAINED LOCALLY.
PRELIMINARY EXCAVATIONS. A start has been made with the work of installing the underground drainage system in the Netherby district of the Borough, a loan for which was raised recently. , The scheme is in the charge of the Borough Engineer (Mr J. R. Richardson) who told a “Guardian” reporter that the first work had been in ascertaining the depth to which excavations could be made before meeting water. So far these preliminaries showed that there is a clear distance of 15 feet through shingle formation. A huge cylinder, 14 feet across and 14 feet deep, is to be put; down at the corner of Kitchener and Bridge Streets, where a trial excavation hole has been put in, -the formation there being found to be all sliingle. This cylinder will be known as the pumping station for the system, which is being made larger than is necessary for Netherby alone, so that jyhen tlie underground system is put into the Allenton district part of it can be linked up with the Netlierby system. The work is being carried out by the Borough Council’s own staff, no contract having been let. The Town Cleric stated this morning that the £4OOO of the loan for the scheme had been obtained locally, in one parcel from an agent. The interest is 4 per cent., the maximum allowed under the Treasury permission to raise the loan, and the term is for 35 years.
