FIFTY YEARS SYNS (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 5, 1S90). Political Association—A. meeting of the Working Men’s Political Association was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday, October 4. Present: Mr J. Keir (chairman), and about 50 others. Mr T. M. Jones moved the notice of motion regarding local option standing in his name, which after ,an expression of opinion from members was carried unanimously: It was decided to hold a special meeting on Saturday, October 11, of ail members, for the purpose of finally confirming the platform of the Association., Woolgrowons—A largely attended meeting of the wioolg rowers of the Ashburton County was Judd on Saturday afternoon in the Orange Hall. The meeting had been convened by Mr Murdoch Bruce (chairman of the Wakanui Road Board) and was called for the object of considering the question which had been the subject of recent . voluminous correspondence between the woolbrokers m Ashburton and the woolbrokers in Christchurch — viz., the resolution of the latter to refrain from attending the public wool sales hitherto held at Ashburton, Ainberley, and Rangiora. One of the resolutions carried read: “That this meeting of woolgrowers pledges itself to support the Ashburton wool sales, and, failing to effect a sale, iii Ashburton, that we forward our wool direct to London.” TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian.” Oct. 5,. 1915). High School’s Part—“Of a total of 346 eligible ex-pupils of the school, no less than 100, or nearly 30 per cent., have gone to the froni or are on their way,’’ said the headmaster (Mr W. F. Watters) at the meeting of the Ashburton High School Board of Governors this morning. He added: “Comparatively speaking, the other secondary schools of the Dominion will find thjs record hard to beat.” Out of the 100 mentioned, 10 have given up their lives v in the cause. The figures covering enlistments are exclusive of several mem s bers of the teaching staff who have volunteered.
