ASHBURTON EAST.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. A meeting of the Ashburton East School Committee was held last evening, the following members being present :—Messrs YV\ S. Kerr (chairman), E .H. Childs, W. K. Mathers, E. Ewing, G. Fowke, jNI. Corbett, J. McKinnon, H. W. Hayward. Correspondence was received from the Canterbury Education Board advising that authority had been given the South Canterbury foreman to effect repairs to the stoves and fireplaces and'the trellis fence at the headmaster’s residence. The Board also advised that arrangements were being made to get assistance under the No. 13 Scheme for ground improvements at the new school site.
The visiting committee (Messrs Hayward and McKinnon) reported that some holes in the playground needed filling in and repairs to several windows and locks were required. It wms left to the visiting committee to have these matters attended to. The committee decided to recommend the appointment of Mr H. A. Barnett, as Grade A assistant master.
The headmaster (Mr S. G. Maefarlane) reported that the roll numbers liad been 423, 421, 420 and 421, the attendances being '3BB, 390, 390 and 390. Mr A. Cleland was relieving pending Mr tCadwallader’s successor taking up his appointment. Mr F. A. Bates (Inspector of Schools) visited the school on Friday to see the probationary assistant. The general examinations at the school had not yet been held. A *
home garden club, with some 20 members, was to bp launched this week. Messrs McKinnon and (Mathers were
appointed as the visiting committee for next month.
