ST. JAMES THEATRE. “THE ROARING TWENTIES” Making its local debut at the St. James to-day is “The Bearing Twenties,” co-starring James Cagney and Priscilla Lane. The film, which deals with the turbulent and eventful decade following the World War, is based on: an original story by Mark Hellingeir, ace newspaper writer whose articles and! stories are read the world over. “The Roaring Twenties” is the autobiography of a nation gone crazy. The day of the flapper and the speakeasy, of mob rule, of fantastic prosperity—in short, the most glittering, gaudy and fantastic age in history is recreated on the screen as the background for a vivid and compelling story of a man who rises to the. heights of power only to be smashed into the oblivion when the era comes to an end. The film has been produced lavishly, with careful attention paid to complete authenticity of background. The speak-easies, the slang and the clothes are all perfectly in tune with the times and! speaking of tunes, unless you’re still in your ’teens, you’ll revel in the nostalgic memories when Priscilla- Lane sings “Melancholy Baby,” “It Had To Be You,” and “I’m Just Wild About Harry.” But aside from all 'this memory-arousing background, there is a vital and compelling story which holds you gripped from beginning to end.
