DETRIMENTAL EFFECT.

REMOVAL OF DUTY EXEMPTION.

CHURCH AND CHARITABLE WORK (Per Press Association). DUNEDIN, This Day. Meetings were held yesterday by the Otago Presbytery and Presbyterian Social Service Association concerning the new legislation which abolishes the exemption of charitable legacies and gifts from duty when legacies exceed £IOOO and gifts exceed £SOO. It was stated that this was likely to result in a heavy decline in the number of legacies and gifts with a detrimental effect on Church and charitable work. Resolutions were carried, emphasising the seriousness of the position, and the relief whiejh such bodies have long rendered the Government by doing work which might well prove a charge upon it. Satisfaction was expressed that the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance had undertaken that the whole position would be reconsidered. Mr Nash is to receive a deputation next week.
