GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

THE ASHBURTON MARKET.

Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report a quiet period on the local market.

There has been an inquiry for white clover of choice quality, but it is in short supply. Odd inquiries are coming to hand for ryegrass and cocksfoot as a large area of pasture will have to be resown owing to the ravages of the grass grub. There is a good demand for seed Garton oats, which are, however, available in only small quantities. Millers are obtaining supplies from Australia, and a shipment is due at Lyttelton in a few days.

Heavy shipments of potatoes continue to bo made to the North Island. The market is still in a depressed state. No change in prices is reported. The following aro prices quoted to farmers, on trucks at country stations unless otherwise indicated, sacks extra, free of commission:—

Wheat Milling, f.0.b., Tuscan 5s lOd, Hunters 6s, Pearl 6s ' 2d, Marquis 6s 4d. (Final payment of 3d a bushel on all wheat at end of year.) Oats A Gartons 3s 9d to 4s, B Gartons 3s 6d, Algerian 3s 9d to 4s, Duns, dark heavy, 4s 3d to 4s 9d. Partridge Peas—6s 9d to 7s a bushel, No. 1 grade. Ryegrass—Perennial 6s 6d to 7s, Italian 7s to Bs. Cocksfoot —8d to 9d. White Clover—ls 9d to 2s 6d. Red Clover—ls to Is 4d. Chaff—£6. Potatoes —Prompt delivery £2. The Egg Market. Prices on the egg market remain unchanged. The buying price is Is 7d a dozen, and the retail price Is lOd. The market is weak and there is not likely to bo any change for two or three days. There was a. general increase m values at Addington to-day, notably in the store sheep, porker, store pig, and vealer sections.

In store sheep the improved values of breeding ewes last week of 3s a head Avas advanced by a similar amount today, there being a wide demand for a good selection. Six-tooth Romney cross ewes, early lumbers, made 27s 6d s.m. crossbred 245, strong wool led halfbreds 21s 6d to 24s 9d, with medium sorts at 17s, and five-year at 18s lOd. The market for fat sheep was erratic, but on the average values were better by Is a head for all classes except inferior. Best wethers made 43s to 465, with extra good sorts at 54s 7d, medium 36s to 40s, ordinary 29s to 345, light to 27s 6d, good ewes 27s to 355, with 41s lOd for best average quality made 22s 6d to 26s 6d.

The entry of 470 fat oattle produced much better quality. Good sorts maintained redent values and second grade beef improved over the later stages by up to 15s a head. Best beef made 44s to 47s per 1001 b, with tops at 495, secondary 37s to 42s and inferior down to 28s. Prime heavy steers made £ls 15s to £l7 ss, with tops at; £2l 7s 6d, medium weights from £l4 ss, ordinary sorts £lO 10s to £l3 10s, light to £lO ss, prime heifers £lO to £l2, tops at £l4 12s 6d, lighter grades from £7 ss. Best cows sold at £ls 17s 6d and prime lines made £8 10s to £lO 10s. Medium types made £6 10s to £7 15s and rough sorts a little less. There were no representative classes in the store cattle pens, the entry consisting mainly of odd cows and a few bulls. Three adult steers, in average store condition, sold at £S 12s 6d, and five rising -two-year-olds at £7 Is. For the porkers the average price per 1b was 81 d to 9d and for baconers 7)d to 81 d. Store pigs sold as follows: —Weaners 23s to 275, slips 29s to 325, small stores 34s to 38s, medium stores 40s to 445, large stores to 50s. Sales of County Clients. DUNEDIN, July 24.

The entry of 1792 sheep at the Burnside stock sale to-day included seven trucks of prime wethers and ewes with a fair sprinkling of hoggets. The sale opened 1 with prices on ia. par with those ruling at the close of the auction last week, and prices were firm to the end of the sale. Hoggets met with a firm sale. Extra prime heavy wethers realised to 50s 6d, heavy from 41s 6d to 47s 6d, prime from. 35s 3d to 38s 9d, medium from 30s 6d to 33s 9d, and light from 275; extra prime heavy young ew'es 41s 6d, extra prime heavy ewes 36s 6d to 39s 6d, prime heavy 32s 6d to 35s 6d, medium 28s to 31s, and light from 20s. There was a medium yarding of 238 head of fat cattle, only a few trucks of prime bullocks and heifers being penned. Prices for extra prime heavy bullocks appreciated by £1 a head on the last sale. Prime medium bullocks and heifers sold at up to 30s a head higher, and medium cattle showed an increase of up to 20s a head. Extra, prime heavy bullocks made to £22. 17s 6d, prime heavy £l7 2s 6d to £l9 17s 6d, prime medium bullocks £l4- 2s 6d to £l6 7s 6d, and light down to £ll 2s 6d. Extra prime heifers made to £l7 7s 6d, prime heavy from £l2 12s 6d to £l4 17s 6d, medium from £9 2s 6d to £ll, and light from £6 17s 6d. Extra prime heavy c-ows made to £l6 12s 6d, prime £l2 2s 6d to £l4 7s 6d, medium £9 2s Gd to £ll, and light from £6 10s.

In a small entry of 45 stoye cattle.

veaJers were in short supply and. sold at late rates. The sale for dairy cows, of which 45 were penned, was a good one for young cows close to profit, £l2 2s 6d being paid for a cow near to calving. Good heifers mid cows and spring calves sold to £7 10s. Inferior sorts were hard to sell. The; yarding of pigs comprised 234, porkers showing a. slight reduction on last week’s rates. Medium bacon pigs did not show any difference on previous prices, but heavy baconers improved, slightly during the sale. Best baconers made to £6 13s.
