ST. JAMES THEATRE
THREE-STAR, BILL. To-night and on Friday afternoon and evening a quality plus quantity bill is scheduled with. the. three-star bill opening with Chapter 2 of the great serial “Mandrake the Magician” followed by “Spirit of Culver” starring Jackie Cooper and Freddie Bartholomew in a timely story ol youth, its eager hopes, dreams and ambitions set against the spectacular background of a military academy. Supporting players include Henry Hull, Andy Divine and Tim Holt. Completing the bill is Will Hay’s new picture “Hey! Hey! U.S.A.” The hilarious results of Will Hay’s introduction to American family life, his skirmishes with rival gangs and his uproarious exploits in the sky-scraping chimney stack of a disused distillery must be seen to he believed, so prepare for a good hour of laughter. With plans moving rapidly for Saturday’s presentation of “Beau Gcsto,” it. behoves intending patrons to make their reservations as early as possible.
HARMONICA BAND DANCE. Thorough preparations for an enjoyable evening’s entertainment have been made by the Ashburton Imperial Harmonica Band which will give a fancydress dance at the Orange Hall to-mor-row evening in aid of the patriotic funds. Ten or eleven prizes for tho best dresses in, several sections have been donated by business firms in Ashburton and the judges of the costumes will be Miesdnmes W. R. Rvbuin and C. Frnmpton. Music will bo supplied by the Harmonica. Band, the Reo Swing Band and Mr Pat Taylor.
