WHEAT WANTED.

URGENT APPEAL SENT OUT. HEAVIER SOWINGS ESSENTIAL. An urgent appeal to the patriotism of the farmers of the Ashburton County is being made by grain merchants at the present time with a view to having as much wheat sown as possible to assist in the; Ncw. Zoaland war effort.

It is being pointed out that wheat is an essential in every country and before long it might he of vital necessity to be able to send wheat to Eingland to assist in feeding the people who have already taken on such a heavy war burden in other directions that cereal growing has had to he put on one side. It is recognised that conditions have been against the sowing of wheat because of the rains of recent weeks, hut growers are being appealed to to get as much preparatory work done as possible at once and to get in the seed this month. Indications up to recently were that there would .be an increase of about 10 per cent in the area put into wheat, hut the weather has been against work on the land and the extra, .effort to catch up with the lost time is being put to farmers. “Wheat we must have, and the farmers are the; only ones who can give it to us,” said an' Ashburton merchant this morning. “Everyone is being asked to make a war effort and in this way the growers can do the best thing towai-d helping the situation. Wheat is essential. We must have, morel of it, and it is a commodity that always commands a price. But apart from this, it. has become a national duty to produce wheat, and produce more of it.”
