U.S. EXPORTS.

RESTRICTIONS CRITICISED. WASHINGTON, March 15. Congress Members are critical of the British suspension of imports from the United States of canned fruits. The isolationist, Senator Nye characterised the action as an attempt to punish the United States for “not giving the Allies more active support.” Others asserted the action was a repudiation of the reciprocal trade pact theory. The criticisms followed the statement of Lord Lothian. British Ambassador in Washington that the restrictions were solely war measures and were not intended to cause a permanent trade diversion. They were necessitated to prevent the accumulation of over large stocks and restrict consumption by non-essentials. Mr Cordell Hull, Secretary of State, at a. press conference, said discussions were continuing with the British and French Governments to safeguard .the United- States’- commercial interests. He explained that United States’ exports to Britain had greatly increased and thoso to France were oyer double, despite the restrictions.-He added that munitions wero only a minor portion of the exports.
