ST. JAMES THEATRE. Presented to two capacity audiences on Saturday, “Bachelor Mother,” teaming Ginger Regers and David Niven, will be shown finally to-night, intending patrons being advised that no extension of season is possible of this hilarious comedy romance which has appeal to all. Hiv/oing a new high in entertainment “The Ice Follies of 1939, starring Joan Crawford with James Stewart, Lew Ayres and Lewis Stone, opens a two-day engagement' starting at the matinee to-morrow (Tuesday.). “The Ice Follies of 1939” contains the happy combination of plot, extravaganza, and some, of the best tunes to come out of Hollywood this season. It features -Joan Crawford in the type of role which skyrocketed her to screen fame, and in, addition introduces iter to audiences as a new find in film songstresses. Janu-s Stewart, as Miss Crawford’s husband, has been happily east. Sentimental, sincere, be gives to hi.\- role the naturalness which characterises all of bis screen appearances and which has placed him m the category of the screen’s most popular loading nien. Lew Ayres too. will add to his already long list of loyal fans as Jimmie's partner. Eddie/ Burgess, whose wisecracks dominate many of the drama’s lighter moments. The. spectacular ice ballets include the entire troupe of'the; original leo Follies. This sequence is filmed in glorious leehmcolour. - SCOTTISH SOCIETY DANCE The Ashburton County Scottish Society’s eainival-dance Saturday night was most successful in every wav. There was a very large attendp.nco and patrons enjoyed a. _ good night’s dancing to music supplied bv Cook’s Orchestra. Montc;Cnrlc*dnnces were won by Miss McKay, and Mr Bennett. Miss Pien.leyfast and Mr Baker, /Miss Corbett and Mr Leslie. Extra ■; wore played by Mrs McGregor, Mr G. Chilton, and Mr Dolphin. The masters of ceremony were Messrs G. Chilton, \V. Tate ajjd T. McGregor.
